Africa Population Pyramid 1997
Africa in 1997
In 1997, Africa had a total population of 770,384,406 people. A decade earlier, in 1987, the population was 592,601,036; it has grown by 30.0% since.
Half of the population was younger than 18.0 years; 43.6% were children under 15 and 3.2% were 65 or older. This is an expansive pyramid — each cohort of children is larger than the one above it, the signature of high birth rates and rapid growth.
