China in 1961

As of 1961, China counted 655,773,486 inhabitants. A decade earlier, in 1951, the population was 553,758,247; it has grown by 18.4% since. Half of the population was younger than 21.1 years; 40.0% were children under 15 and 3.9% were 65 or older. This is an expansive pyramid — each cohort of children is larger than the one above it, the signature of high birth rates and rapid growth.

The deep notch at the base of this pyramid records the demographic shock of the Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961), when births collapsed and mortality surged.
