As of 2009, Eastern Africa counted 335,536,808 inhabitants. Over the previous ten years the population grew by 33.0%, up from 252,375,733 in 1999.
The median age was 17.1 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 87.6 children under 15 and 5.0 people aged 65 or over. The pyramid is expansive: its wide base of young cohorts reflects high fertility and a rapidly growing population.
