As of 1991, Kuwait counted 1,351,398 inhabitants. A decade earlier, in 1981, the population was still 1,583,426; it has declined by 14.7% since.
Half of the population was younger than 23.6 years; 35.1% were children under 15 and 2.0% were 65 or older. The pyramid is expansive: its wide base of young cohorts reflects high fertility and a rapidly growing population.
