In 1960, New Zealand had a total population of 2,379,481 people. That is 24.5% more than in 1950, when the population stood at 1,911,263. The median age was 27.5 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 56.1 children under 15 and 14.8 people aged 65 or over. The pyramid is expansive: its wide base of young cohorts reflects high fertility and a rapidly growing population.
