Republic of Korea in 2005

As of 2005, the Republic of Korea counted 47,851,644 inhabitants. A decade earlier, in 1995, the population was 45,368,426; it has grown by 5.5% since. Half of the population was younger than 34.5 years; 19.2% were children under 15 and 9.0% were 65 or older. The narrow base of the pyramid marks a constrictive age structure: fertility below replacement level and a rising share of older people.
