Southern Africa in 2005

As of 2005, Southern Africa counted 56,328,589 inhabitants. That is 11.4% more than in 1995, when the population stood at 50,564,431. The median age was 22.9 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 50.5 children under 15 and 7.8 people aged 65 or over. This is an expansive pyramid — each cohort of children is larger than the one above it, the signature of high birth rates and rapid growth.
