As of 2022, Southern Europe counted 151,975,858 inhabitants. That is 1.5% less than in 2012, when the population stood at 154,365,485. With a median age of 46.2 years, Southern Europe had a youth dependency ratio of 20.7 and an old-age dependency ratio of 34.1 per 100 people of working age. This is a constrictive pyramid — its base is narrower than its middle, the signature of sustained low birth rates and population ageing.
