As of 1969, the United States of America counted 205,300,032 inhabitants. Over the previous ten years the population grew by 15.9%, up from 177,145,765 in 1959. The median age was 27.9 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 47.3 children under 15 and 15.7 people aged 65 or over. This is an expansive pyramid — each cohort of children is larger than the one above it, the signature of high birth rates and rapid growth.
The bulge of cohorts born between 1946 and 1964 — the post-war baby boom — is the defining feature of the United States pyramid, visible as it moves up the age scale over the decades.
