As of 1983, the United States of America counted 236,986,365 inhabitants. A decade earlier, in 1973, the population was 215,006,551; it has grown by 10.2% since. The median age was 30.9 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 32.7 children under 15 and 17.2 people aged 65 or over. The narrow base of the pyramid marks a constrictive age structure: fertility below replacement level and a rising share of older people.
The bulge of cohorts born between 1946 and 1964 — the post-war baby boom — is the defining feature of the United States pyramid, visible as it moves up the age scale over the decades.
