United States of America in 1997

In 1997, the United States of America had a total population of 273,468,012 people. That is 11.1% more than in 1987, when the population stood at 246,161,291. The median age was 34.6 years, and for every 100 people of working age (15–64) there were 32.6 children under 15 and 18.7 people aged 65 or over. This is a stationary pyramid — similar numbers in each age group up to the older cohorts, the signature of near-replacement fertility.

The bulge of cohorts born between 1946 and 1964 — the post-war baby boom — is the defining feature of the United States pyramid, visible as it moves up the age scale over the decades.
