United States of America in 2006

In 2006, the United States of America had a total population of 298,730,210 people. Over the previous ten years the population grew by 10.3%, up from 270,860,696 in 1996. Half of the population was younger than 36.4 years; 20.2% were children under 15 and 12.2% were 65 or older. The pyramid is stationary: cohort sizes are roughly even through the younger ages, reflecting fertility close to replacement level and slow population change.

The bulge of cohorts born between 1946 and 1964 — the post-war baby boom — is the defining feature of the United States pyramid, visible as it moves up the age scale over the decades.
